Kanji radicals vs components: what is the difference?
A radical (部首, ぶしゅ) is one particular component of a kanji: the single one a dictionary files the character under. Every kanji has exactly one. Components are all the parts you can see inside the character, and most kanji have two or more. So “radical” is a filing decision made by lexicographers, and “component” is a plain description of the shape.
The two words get used interchangeably in study material, and that causes real confusion, because the part that helps you remember a character is often not the part the dictionary indexed it under. What a radical (部首) is: a dictionary’s filing key
The formal definition is narrow. A radical is “a visually prominent component of a Chinese character under which the character is traditionally listed in a Chinese dictionary” (Wikipedia), and the key phrase is what follows: “Each character was listed under only one element, which is then referred to as the radical for that character.”
The standard set is the 214 Kangxi radicals, introduced in the Zihui and fixed by the 18th-century Kangxi Dictionary. Before search-by-drawing and handwriting input existed, this was the lookup mechanism: identify the radical, then find the character by counting the remaining strokes. That is the problem the system was built to solve, and it solves it well.
What it was never built to do is tell you which parts of a character are worth remembering. Assignment sometimes follows convention rather than salience, and once a character has been filed, the other components in it get no label at all even when they are the more useful ones.
The two jobs a component does: meaning and sound
Most kanji are not single pictures. They are compounds of a part that gestures at meaning and a part that gestures at sound. Of the 3,500 most frequently used Chinese characters, 58% are phono-semantic compounds, and over 90% of the characters in modern written vernacular Chinese originated that way (Wikipedia). Kanji inherit that structure.
The semantic component, also called the determinative, “supplies an element of meaning” and is typically the one that ends up serving as the radical in dictionary listings. The phonetic component gives “a hint for the character’s pronunciation”.
That hint is a good bet, not a rule. The same source notes that phonetic elements grew less reliable through “sound changes that had taken place over the two to three thousand years” since the characters were coined. On the Japanese side, Jim Breen’s kanji phonetics list at the EDRDG, built on Natalie Hamilton’s The Kanji Code, organizes characters under 150 phonetic components: 130 where the component’s on-reading matches the kanji’s exactly, and 20 where the two rhyme (edrdg.org). Learning even a handful of the frequent ones gives you a first guess at readings for characters you have never met.
Worked example: 晴れ (はれ, clear weather)
晴 is twelve strokes, on-reading セイ, kun-reading は.れる, meaning “clear up” (Jisho). Its radical is 日 (ひ, sun or day). Its components are 日 and 青 (あお, blue).
Both components are doing work, but different work. 日 supplies the meaning: weather, sun, sky. 青 supplies the sound. It is entry 74 in the Kanji Code list of phonetic components, glossed “blue” with the on-reading セイ (thekanjicode.com), which is exactly 晴’s on-reading.
Now watch what happens to the radical across three characters that all contain 青:

The radical moves: 日, then 水 in its 氵 form, then 青 itself (Jisho: 清, 静). The component that predicts the reading never moves. If you had learned only the radicals here, you would have learned three unrelated facts. If you learned the component 青, you got one fact that pays out three times, and it happens to be the fact that predicts pronunciation.
Here is how the first of those characters is hooked in Moji’s catalog:
晴れ (はれ, clear weather) 日 (sun) + 青 (blue), the bright sun rises into a deep blue sky after every cloud has vanished.
Both components are named, both glosses are true, and the closing line is a scene rather than a restatement of the meaning printed on the card.
Why the glosses have to be true even when the story is invented
Any component can be a hook, including one that is purely phonetic and carries no meaning at all. Moji does not restrict hooks to semantic components or to the 214 radicals, because a phonetic peg you can actually picture beats a technically correct one you cannot. The rule is narrower than that: the component has to genuinely be in the character, and the gloss attached to it has to be true. An invented image is fine, since you are the only person who has to see it. An invented meaning is a claim about Japanese, and a false one compounds, because it will collide with the truth in every other character that uses that component. So should you learn the 214 radicals as a list?
Probably not as a first step. Radical knowledge pays off for dictionary lookup and for reading dictionary entries, both of which matter more once you are already reading. Component knowledge pays off at recall time, from the very first character. They overlap heavily, but they are not the same study project, and only one of them has an immediate return.
The practical route is to pick components up as they arrive attached to words you are actually studying, so each one shows up already tied to a reading and a meaning you needed anyway.
